Title: Tree Risk Assessment - Perception Vs Reality

Description: Urban tree risk is frequently assessed through the lens of perception rather than hard data, as the true level of risk is often unknown. These perceptions are shaped by personal experiences, professional training, and individual risk tolerances, which can vary widely across practitioners. As storm-related data accumulates, we gain valuable insights into how our judgments align with actual outcomes—offering a path toward more accurate and objective tree safety assessments.

    Speaker: Sydney Hudzinski-Huber
Title: Are You a Crew Leader or a Crew Boss? The Difference Between Pointing Fingers and Extending a Hand

Course Description: In arboriculture, the best climbers and arborists often get promoted into leadership roles. While the higher pay and new title seem appealing, too often these individuals receive no real training on how to lead. They may have the helmet and the authority—but instead of being leaders, they’re just crew bosses.

The problem doesn’t stop there. Crew members themselves are rarely encouraged to lead in their own way. Many fall into the trap of waiting for orders, ready to respond with that all-too-common phrase: “That’s not my job.”

This presentation will explore what it truly means to lead. You’ll learn the difference between inspiration and manipulation, and how to build your crew members up instead of breaking them down. You’ll discover how to shift from using and exhausting your team to inspiring and improving them—so that everyone grows together.

Speaker Bio: Sydney stumbled into the tree care industry six years ago. She spent the first year working on herself and gaining credentials. After that her true passion showed in mentoring. Quickly she found roles in different organizations helping teach and mentor others in the industry. One of her biggest passions is helping the next generation in arboriculture. Sydney brings a burst of energy and laughs when working with others in any environment. Making the day so much more fun and engaging for everyone. No one wants to be cranky while working hard!

For work her full-time job is for a municipality in Minneapolis, MN. There she takes care of the urban canopy for the city. She also is an assistant instructor for the Women’s Tree Climbing Workshop®. Volunteering as well with the Minnesota Society of Arboriculture on their Programs and Education Committee and helps instruct at multiple events. As well as working with the University of Wisconsin Stevens Point instructing at their tree climbing class every semester. If not instructing, she will present or attend industry conferences and expositions. If not pursuing any of those passions, she is competing at Tree Climbing Competitions.

Sydney graduated from the University of Minnesota, Duluth with a B.S. in Biology. During that time, she worked in a plant physiology lab on a research project. Her love for trees and nature goes all the way back when she was a pipsqueak following her dad through the woods. If Sydney is not traveling or tree climbing you can find her on a trail with her seven-year-old English Springer Spaniel, River. They both love hiking, camping, or upland bird hunting.

    Speaker: Mariah Menzie
Title: Beyond Bandages: Psychological Response Training – Addressing the Missing Element in Safety Training

Description: Arborists excel at physical safety training, yet the industry rarely addresses how psychological responses influence crisis outcomes. During high-stress events—such as severe accidents—mental and emotional reactions can directly affect decision-making, crew communication, and even survival. This session introduces Psychological Response Training (PRT), an evidence-based, industry-specific approach to preparing arborists for the mental demands of crisis situations. Participants will learn how the initial period of denial during an accident can mean the difference between life and death, and how cultural barriers within the tree care industry—such as the “toughness” mindset—create improper expectations and hinder effective emergency response. The presentation will also show how PRT can be seamlessly integrated into existing safety and technical trainings without requiring additional hours or costly programs. By addressing the often-overlooked psychological side of crisis response, arborists can build safer, more resilient crews and improve outcomes in the moments when they matter most.

Speaker Bio: Mariah Menzie is a Board-Certified Master Arborist (MW-5715B), a Certified Tree Care Safety Professional (CTSP), and Tree Risk Assessment Qualified. Based in Norman, Oklahoma, she is a multi-faceted professional whose expertise spans consulting, IT management, research, and workforce training.
Mariah has achieved several historic milestones in her field, including becoming Oklahoma's first female Master Arborist and the first woman from Oklahoma to represent the Midwest ISA in the 2019 ITCC. Her pioneering spirit and dedication to advancing the industry have earned her recognition in the Oklahoma Museum of Oral History's "Women in STEM Careers", celebrating her groundbreaking accomplishments and inspirational journey.

Speakers: Tim Rinne & Kay Walter, Hawley Hamelt
Title: Negotiating an Urban Farm in the City Core
Course Description: The Hawley Hamlet Neighborhood Garden is an Urban Agriculture project located just 12 blocks from downtown Lincoln, Nebraska. In a standard 2-acre residential block with 16 single-family dwellings and no vacant lots, over 4/5 of an acre (the equivalent of 80 yards of a football field, sideline to sideline) has been converted from lawn to horticulture—including vegetable beds, native pollinator gardens, berry brambles, grape arbors and an urban orchard of 60 fruit and nut trees. Twenty households are now annually growing some of their own food—and getting to know their neighbors.

The story of the Hawley Hamlet is something that co-founders Kay Walter and Tim Rinne yearn to see retold all across America. During their presentation, these two “Hamleteers” will explain how the Hamlet originated and how they have worked collaboratively with Lincoln city government, local utilities and their neighbors over the past 15 years to create this vibrant social and agricultural model in the built urban environment.

Session Title: Urban Forestry: Turning Data Into Action

    Course Description:
Urban Forestry: Turning Data Into Action - Tree inventories and public surveys have started to become more commonplace in our public organizations but translating data into action isn't always easy and writing the plans that accomplish this certainly isn't either. How do we get this complex information communicated effectively to create comprehensive plans which accomplish real and prioritized goals? And possibly more importantly, how do we ensure we are capturing the right data in the first place to provide solutions to our actual problems, and the concerns of the communities we serve? Join Steve as we take a walk into the deep woods of how data and communication come together in a management plan to achieve real, tangible results. Also included in this session will be an update to the Tree Risk Assessment Qualification program's 3.0 rollout, and how this might impact municipal forestry programs and their risk management planning.

Speaker Bio: Steve Lane is a Board Certified Master Arborist, TRAQ Instructor, and currently serves on the ISA Board of Directors. He has been in the Arboriculture and Urban Forestry space for 20 years, and currently owns his own business, The Response Growth Collective, which focuses on industry growth and education as well as consulting in risk management, urban forestry management planning, GIS Services, and workforce development in the Forestry and GIS spaces.
